Getting there and around
Airport: Cardiff (CWL).
Public transport: a single ticket is typically £1.75–£3.5. A day pass or a travel card is usually better value if you ride several times a day.
Money and tipping
Currency: Pound sterling (£). Scotland and Northern Ireland also have their own banknotes, which are valid everywhere in the UK..
Tipping: About 10 to 12.5% in restaurants. Check whether a service charge has been added to the bill.
Take a debit or credit card with no foreign transaction fees if you can, carry a little cash for markets and small cafés, and when a machine offers to charge you in pounds, choose the local currency.
Typical daily spend: see the Cardiff cost guide.
Language, culture and daily rhythm
Language: English, plus Welsh and Scottish Gaelic in places.
Rhythm of the day: Pubs and restaurants serve food earlier than in southern Europe. Many attractions close around 5 to 6pm.
- Contactless cards and phones work on most buses, trams and the Tube.
- Advance train tickets are far cheaper than buying on the day.
- The weather changes quickly, so layers and a light waterproof are always wise.
Booking ahead and saving money
Free things to do: 6 of the 10 places in our Cardiff guide are free. See them.
Book timed-entry sights, popular restaurants and weekend trains ahead. Flights and hotels are usually cheapest booked 6 to 12 weeks out for city breaks, and earlier for summer beach holidays.
Safety, health and watch-outs
Emergency number: 999 or 112.
- Peak-time rail fares can be steep: book early and travel off-peak.
- Many museums are free but ask you to book timed tickets for popular exhibitions.
A UK GHIC gives you access to state healthcare in the EU on the same terms as locals, but it is not a substitute for travel insurance. Take out insurance that covers medical care, cancellation and your activities.
